  • Purple/Red Stems & 4 Blade Fan Leaves

Posted by keemo219 on September 27, 2020 at 12:38 pm

Hi guys, on my first grow and have some questions about my plant.

Plant is about 3 weeks into veg.

One thing I noticed is that all my stems are reddish purple right before each fan leaf. I was wondering if this is a deficiency/toxicity or if its natural.

I also have a few early fan leaves that only have 4 blades. Haven’t had any more in a while though. Was wondering if this could be a sign of a hermaphrodite.

It maybe genetic if its a purple strain but I’ve also been told its stress/co2 poisoning issue but that was the entire stem.

    Best of luck

Could be light stress, or if your water temp is too low can cause red stem, if it’s light move it up and they’ll be fine

Honestly i cut all those fat fan leaves with a dark stem right off. Im not sure on your grow space but me personally, see them covering new growth that id rather have getting good light. If you ask me they just suck up nutrients and light …. get them gone✌🏻

Keeping in mind I’m only on my 3rd indoor grow, but I’ve treated purple stems as a calmag deficiency and it seemed to make the purple go away

Purpling stems is also sometimes a sign of a magnesium deficiency

wouldn’t worry your self if it’s just the petiols (thats the stem that attaches leaf to branch, think I’ve spelt that right) chances are it’s just Gentics. If you find your stems/branches developing purple stripes try raising your light or dimming before you over fert with cal mag. Other tip for mag diff and to stay on top of it, mix up some Epsom salts (1 tbl per ltr) and foila spray weekly until 2nd to 3rd of flower.

The red stems I have been told 3 different things that cause this.
    1. Magnesium defiency.
    2. Too cold of an enviroment.
    3. Stored nutrients.

If anyone has ever actually gotten a clear answer to what causes this I would love to know I don’t mind it and enjoy the extra coloration to my girls, and they are producing great smoke!
